When we read or hear this Gospel scene from Matthew 14:22-33, it can be tempting to focus only on the mighty sign of both Jesus and then Peter walking on the water. This miracle has become almost a trope and a mere meme. The Netflix series from earlier this year, Messiah reaches something of a climax when the central enigmatic character Al-Masih walks across the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
When we read the gospel account more closely, within the whole context of this rich and wonderful gospel, I think that we can see that there is so much more to this account of Jesus praying and calling us to be faithful to the God who promised to always be with us – even in the midst of the storm and the waves.
